Ball Bearing

Design of Ball Bearing

 What is Bearing?

Bearing is a mechanical element that permits relative motion between two parts, such as the shaft and the housing, with minimum friction.

The function of Bearings -
(i) The bearing supports the shaft or the axle and holds it in the correct position.

(ii) The bearing ensures free rotation of the shaft or the axle with minimum friction.

(iii) The bearing takes up the forces that act on the shaft or the axle and transmits them to the frame or the foundation.

Rolling Contact Bearing -

Rolling contact bearings are also called anti-friction bearings or simply ball bearings. Rolling elements, such as balls or rollers, are introduced between the surfaces that are in relative motion. In this type of bearing, sliding friction is replaced by rolling friction.

The assembly of rolling contact bearing consist of 4 parts.

1.Ball    2.Rim    3.Inner cage     4.Outer Rim
